ILS App - Virtual GPS-Based Instrument Landing System
The Virtual GPS-Based ILS App is a versatile tool designed to help pilots practice instrument landing procedures using a GPS-generated ILS signal. By creating a virtual runway at any chosen location, pilots can simulate ILS approaches and refine procedural skills in a controlled environment. The runway can be positioned on the ground to align with real-world runways or at a chosen altitude for in-flight practice, allowing flexible training without the need for an actual ILS installation.
GPS based ILS App for Procedural Practice
With the ILS App, pilots can create ILS approaches scenarios tailored to their training needs at any location and altitude. For example, a runway can be placed at 5,000 feet, with the approach starting from 8,000 feet, 9.4 nautical miles away, following a 3° glide slope. The system requires the precise runway heading and magnetic variation to ensure alignment and realistic approach geometry. Touchdown points can be pinned on the map, allowing pilots to practice glide slope and localizer alignment with greater accuracy.
The virtual ILS App simulates standard indicators, including a localizer with a 20-foot error margin and a glide slope with a 20–30 foot error margin when altitude calibration is enabled. This setup lets pilots practice approach planning, instrument interpretation, and procedural timing in real-world flight scenarios without relying on physical ILS infrastructure.
How It Works
The ILS App function by placing on the map a single reference point, the “dot,” at the runway threshold. This point becomes the origin of the simulated localizer and glide-slope guidance, directing the aircraft toward it. The method differs completely from a real ILS, which depends on ground-based transmitters and defined signal patterns. The dot can also be positioned above the surface to create a virtual runway in mid-air, allowing pilots to practice ILS-style approaches at altitude without relying on any actual ILS installation.
Training Applications
The Virtual GPS-Based ILS App is designed for:
Practicing approach procedures and instrument interpretation in-flight.
Developing familiarity with glide slope and localizer indications.
Reinforcing procedural discipline for precision approaches.
Realistic, Flexible, and Practical
This ILS app a realistic approach experience in a safe and configurable environment. Pilots can practice ILS procedures at any location or altitude, improving their procedural knowledge, situational awareness, and approach planning skills. By simulating real ILS behavior without depending on installed systems, it offers a practical way to reinforce instrument approach proficiency and procedural confidence.
To achieve precision, the precise runway heading must be used (eg runway is maked 35 but is 345, input 345 degrees) and magnetic variation must be precise too, possibly with the decimal point and on map, position pin on touchdown point.
Localizer error = 20ft.
Glide Slope error = 20-30 ft with altidute calibration enabled.
This feature is strictly for training and familiarization only, not to be used for real ILS instrument approaches.
